Galvanization of steel surfaces is widely used to protect steel surfaces from rust or corrosion. A thin zinc coating is coated to the steel surface in the galvanization process, which prevents the steel from corrosion, but that same zinc coating can form its own white rust.

White rust is a localized corrosion attack on zinc-coated metallic surfaces and appears as a white, chalky substance as a deposit. This rapid corrosion usually forms when zinc is exposed to oxygen and hydrogen.

White storage stain forms primarily on new zinc-coated steel products. This deposit of white rust damages the appearance of the steel and slowly consumes the complete zinc coating on the steel surface. White rust is generally called zinc hydroxide and is formed due to the chemical reaction of zinc with air and water in wet conditions.

White rust prevention can be done using ROTO CHROME 10, available from Prime Specialty Limited.

Fume control is becoming gradually important for good community relationships and operator comfort. Fuming can be reduced by careful operations in wet or dry galvanizing.

 Dry galvanizing does produce fumes from the preflux film, which is carried into the kettle on Steel. The flux on the metal will melt off of the Steel in the kettle. In this case, the thin flux layer can only hold 2 to 3% of Ammonium Chloride. Ammonium Chloride in excess will be vaporized, forming fumes and smoke.

 Fume Suppressants are used to operate a galvanizing plant with minimal fumes as alternatives to dry galvanizing. These galvanizing fluxes with fume controller contain volatile Ammonium Chloride at low levels (Ammonium chloride, the chemical which usually creates objectionable fuming). However, with less Ammonium Chloride, the degree of activity as a kettle flux significantly decreases. It is powerful, therefore, that good metal preparation be provided to compensate for the low level of flux activity.

 Active top flux can be used with minimal fuming when good galvanizing procedures are followed. This allows operators to take advantage of the benefits of active top fluxes while keeping fumes at an acceptable level.

Degreaser is a chemical agent used to remove organic contaminants (dirt, grease, oil, wax, and grime) and accelerate the derusting of the surface of the metal.

Alkaline Degreaser is a chemical degreaser of Caustic material such as Sodium hydroxide. The highly alkaline chemical can react with grease and oils and helps remove the same. Alkali degreasers operate at 50-95°C and clean the surface effectively. Alkali degreasing process can be used by various methods such as dipping, spraying, and ultrasonic. It is preferably used for Aluminium, Brass, Copper, Iron, Steel, and Zamak. Alkaline degreaser works well for Iron and Steel, but necessary care to be taken to avoid abrasion in cleaning metals like Aluminium and Brass.

Acidic Degreaser is a chemical degreaser that works at an acid pH, and it changes oils and greases into a flocculant that settles at the bottom of the tank. It is perfect with pickling tanks, so there is no requirement to rinse the Steel before the pickling stage. The general components include acids (Phosphoric, Sulfuric, Hydrochloric, Hydrofluoric, etc.), emulsifiers, inhibitors, and surfactants. Acidic Degreasers are used to remove oxidative layers along with cleaning metal surfaces. This product type should be used on rust and scale cleaning can be accomplished with acidic chemicals. It can be used for Aluminium, Iron, Steel, and Zinc alloy parts.

Neutral Degreasers are preferably used to protect Non-Ferrous metals such as Aluminium and Copper that are cleaned without abrasion, etching, matting, and tarnishing. Soft metals such as Aluminium, Brass, Copper, Zamak, etc., use Neutral Degreasers for degreasing work because the metals are not strongly acidic or alkaline.
