Alkalinity builders are primarily used to raise the pH level of the water they are placed in. For steam boilers, pH levels must remain high to prevent corrosion, minimize the amount of silica plating in a high-pressure boiler, and maintain the proper efficiency of the boiler. An alkalinity builder is not needed if the feed water has a high alkalinity, but an alkalinity builder is required if the water is too acidic.
Determination of the pH level of the boiler water is an important step and is done by using a pH sensor. If the pH levels are low and acidic, alkalinity builders will help increase the alkalinity of the water. When there is an increase in the alkalinity of boiler feed water, it helps to protect the feed line and hot well from acid corrosion. This required chemical depends on the pH level in feed water.

Amines are neutralizing chemicals that can keep the condensate pipe on a boiler from corroding. Condensate water from a steam boiler can be highly corrosive to piping, which can damage the boiler and cause expensive repairs to fix the issue. The three neutralizing amines obtained for boiler water treatment include morpholine, dimethylaminoethanol, and cyclohexylamine. While purchasing these neutralizing amines as a singular component is possible, most solutions will be blended with all three.
When these amines are placed into the boiler water, they will increase the condensate pH, which reduces the possibility of corrosion. Low pH within condensate piping is known to cause high amounts of corrosion, leading to condensate leaks and steam leaks. Once this chemical has been applied to the water in the boiler, it will provide increased boiler reliability, cleanliness, and protection. This chemical will protect all condensate systems, as condensate piping is the main area of focus. To determine if this chemical is needed, it’s recommended to use a pH sensor to test the return condensate.

Small quantities of hardness salts settle down, together with traces of suspended matter, into the feed water during the operation of a steam boiler. Over time, the concentrations of these salts and suspended matter build in the form of a 'sludge,' if not appropriately treated, it can settle onto heat transfer surfaces, eventually 'baking' on to form a hard crystalline scale. A build-up of sludge in steam boilers and boiler water systems causes problems, and its negative impact should be minimised using specialist chemical formulations, i.e., sludge conditioners.
Organic and Polymer-based boiler water sludge conditioners prevent the suspended solids from settling and 'baking' onto important boiler system surfaces. Sludge conditioners keep the unwanted matter (sludge) in solution, which can be removed via the boiler blowdown.
